Frequently Asked Questions
Needlepoint Finishing
What types of needlepoint finishing do you offer?
We currently offer finishing for ornaments, door hangers, tray inserts, coasters, eyeglass cases, bag charms, magnets, and other small flat-finished pieces. Pillow and eyeglass case finishing is coming soon!
Have something a little unusual? Send us a note — we’re always happy to see what you’ve stitched and let you know if we can finish it.
How does your finishing process work?
Start by filling out our online finishing form with the details of your project and your finishing selections. Once your form is submitted and your deposit is paid, your spot in our finishing queue is reserved.
Then, package up your canvas and send it our way! Once it arrives, we’ll review your piece and selections and send your final finishing invoice. Your finished piece will be shipped back to you once the remaining balance is paid.
How do I measure my canvas?
Measure the longest stitched width and longest stitched height of your piece in inches, then multiply those two numbers to determine the total square inches.
For example, a piece measuring 4" wide × 5" tall is 20 square inches.
Measure the stitched area of the canvas itself — not the excess blank canvas surrounding it.
Should I add extra rows of stitching for finishing?
For ornaments, cookies, coasters, magnets, and other flat finishes, yes! We recommend adding 1–2 extra rows of tent stitch around the outside of your design whenever possible. These extra rows give us a little breathing room when wrapping and finishing your canvas and help prevent any unstitched canvas from peeking out around the edges.
Keep in mind that these are finishing rows—they may be partially or completely hidden beneath the cording or trim on your finished piece. If you have lettering, a border, or another important design element close to the edge, adding those extra rows is especially helpful.
For pillows and sewn finishes, extra rows aren't always necessary. The amount of canvas taken into the seam depends on the construction of the pillow and the design itself. If you're stitching specifically with a pillow finish in mind, feel free to reach out if you're unsure whether your canvas needs additional rows.
What is considered an irregular shape?
An irregular shape is any piece that requires more detailed cutting, shaping, or finishing than a standard circle, square or rectangle.
If you’re unsure whether your piece qualifies as irregular, just send us a photo!
Do I need to block my needlepoint before sending it?
No! One round of blocking is included in your finishing price, so please send your canvas to us as-is. Most pieces require only one round of blocking before finishing. If your canvas is significantly distorted and requires additional blocking to achieve the best possible shape, additional rounds of blocking are $15 each. We’ll let you know before proceeding if additional blocking is necessary.
What type of thread can I send for cording?
If you’re providing your own thread for custom cording, please choose a fiber that is strong, smooth, and suitable for twisting. Good options include DMC Pearl Cotton #5, DMC Pearl Cotton #3, Silk & Ivory, Pepper Pot Silk, Vineyard Silk, Planet Earth Silk, Silk Lamé Braid, Kreinik metallic braids, and similar sturdy needlepoint fibers.
Please send full skeins or cards whenever possible to ensure we have enough fiber to create your cording. The amount required will vary depending on the size of your piece and the number of colors used.
Not sure if your thread will work? Send us a note! We’re happy to help. Some specialty, fuzzy, fragile, highly textured, or very fine fibers may not be suitable for cording, and Bird Dog may recommend an alternative if needed.
Can I choose my backing fabric?
Yes! Depending on the finishing style, you’ll be able to select from our available backing options, including cotton and silk dupioni.
You may also provide your own fabric if you have something special in mind. Please make sure you send enough material for us to properly cut and finish your piece. We will return any leftover fabric to you with your finished piece!
Can I provide my own fabric?
Absolutely. We love incorporating special fabrics into finishing! If you’d like to supply your own backing fabric, select that option on your finishing form and include the fabric when you send us your canvas.
What if I don't know which finishing options to choose?
Don’t worry! Select the options that feel closest to what you have in mind and leave us a note with any questions or special requests. You can also upload inspiration photos to help us better understand your vision. We’re happy to use our best judgment and will reach out if we need any clarification before finishing your piece.
How long does finishing take?
Our turnaround time varies depending on the type of project, time of year, and current finishing queue. Our current estimated turnaround time will always be listed at the top of our website.
Turnaround time begins once your canvas has been received by Bird Dog and does not include shipping time.
Can you rush my finishing?
Rush finishing may occasionally be available depending on our current workload and the type of project. If you have a specific deadline, please contact us before sending your canvas to see if we can accommodate it. Additional rush fees may apply.
Can I request something completely custom?
Of course! We love a good idea. If you have a special finishing detail, unusual shape, unique backing fabric, or something else in mind that isn't listed on our form, reach out via email at hello@birddogneedlepoint.com before submitting your project and we'll let you know what's possible.
How should I package my needlepoint?
Place your stitched canvas in a waterproof or resealable plastic bag before putting it inside your shipping package. Please clearly label your project with your name, email address, and phone number.
If you're sending multiple pieces, we recommend individually bagging and labeling each one (with their corresponding fabric and cording if you're sending it) so we know exactly which finishing selections belong to each canvas.
Please do not fold your canvas for shipping.
Should I cut the excess canvas off before sending it?
No! Please leave the excess canvas around your stitching intact. Our finishers will trim your canvas appropriately during the finishing process.
How should I ship my needlepoint to Bird Dog?
You are responsible for shipping your canvas to us. We strongly recommend using a trackable shipping method so you can confirm when your package has arrived.
Once your piece is finished and your final balance has been paid, we'll carefully package it and ship it back to you.
What happens if my package is lost in the mail?
We strongly recommend using tracked and insured shipping when sending your needlepoint. Bird Dog cannot be responsible for canvases lost or damaged while in transit to us.
Can I send more than one piece at a time?
Absolutely! You can send multiple canvases in the same package. Just make sure each piece is clearly identified, and that you've completed the necessary finishing information for each project.
When do I pay for finishing?
A finishing deposit is required when you submit your project and reserves your place in our finishing queue. Once we receive and review your canvas, we'll confirm your selections and send your final invoice.
Your remaining balance must be paid before your finished piece is shipped back to you.
Why might my final price differ from my initial quote?
Our online pricing is based on the measurements and finishing selections you provide. Once we receive your canvas, we'll verify its size, shape, materials, and requested finishing details.
If anything differs from the information submitted — or if your project requires additional custom work — we'll adjust the final invoice accordingly. If there is a significant change, we'll contact you before proceeding.
Will you photograph my finished needlepoint?
We love sharing our customers' beautiful projects! You'll have the opportunity to let us know whether you consent to Bird Dog photographing and sharing your finished piece on our website, social media, and other marketing materials.
Your preference will never affect the care we put into your project.
